Here are the questions we get the most:

Q: How do I know if I need counselling or psychotherapy?
A: You may seek counselling due to a specific life event or crisis, or you might be encouraged to try counselling by family, friends, or colleagues. Counselling can help you gain clarity on complex issues, break old patterns, or guide you through personal growth and self-development.

Q: What happens during a counselling session?
A: In your session, your therapist will listen attentively and reflect on what you share, creating a safe and non-judgmental space. You are free to discuss anything, from daily experiences and feelings to deeper concerns like regrets, aspirations, or even unresolved trauma.

Q: What types of issues can counselling help with?
A: Counselling can address a wide range of concerns, including but not limited to:

  • Anxiety (generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, phobias)
  • Depression (low mood, social withdrawal)
  • Grief and loss
  • Work-life balance issues
  • Stress and personal pressures
  • Relationship challenges (marital issues, divorce, pre-marital concerns)
  • Self-esteem and confidence issues
  • Life transitions and changes
  • Trauma and recovery
  • Acculturative stress for immigrants

Q: What kinds of people seek counselling?
A: We welcome clients from all backgrounds and walks of life, regardless of culture, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Whether you're navigating personal, relational, or emotional challenges, we’re here to help.

Q: How do I start working with a counsellor?
A: It’s easy! You can book your consultation online, by email, or over the phone. We will schedule a time that fits your availability and help you take the first step toward healing.

Q: How do I know which counselling approach is right for me?
A: Don’t worry if you’re unsure about which approach suits you best. During your initial consultation, we’ll explore your goals and needs, and together with your therapist, you'll decide on the most effective approach to support your healing.

Q: How long will I need to continue counselling?
A: The duration of counselling depends on your personal circumstances and goals. Many clients find that 8 to 10 sessions are effective, but some may benefit from longer-term support, which can go beyond 20 sessions for more complex concerns.

Q: Will my counselling sessions be confidential?
A: Yes, your counselling sessions are confidential. However, there are certain legal and ethical limits to confidentiality, which your therapist will explain during your first session.

Q: What if I feel my therapist isn’t the right match for me?
A: It’s important to feel comfortable with your therapist. If you feel the fit isn’t right, we’ll be happy to arrange a free consultation with another therapist to ensure you find the support that works best for you.

Q: Will my therapist be available in a crisis?
A: Your therapist will be available during your scheduled appointment times. In the case of an emergency or crisis outside of those times, you’ll need to seek other immediate resources such as Alberta 211 or 911.

Q: Can I use health insurance to pay for counselling sessions?
A: We recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm coverage for sessions with a certified psychotherapist or counsellor. Direct billing is currently available only to Canadian Veteran Affairs and National Blue Cross clients.

Q: Why is there a fee for missed or cancelled sessions?
A: Your therapist reserves your session time just for you each week. If you need to cancel, please provide at least 24 hours' notice. Any missed sessions or late cancellations will be charged at the full fee.

Q: Can I receive counselling online or by phone?
A: Yes! We offer online and telephone counselling for clients who cannot attend in person. We use the secure doxy.me platform for virtual sessions, ensuring privacy and confidentiality without any software downloads required.
